끝의 종 포폴페이지
프로젝트 명칭은 ‘끝의 종'(Bell of the End, 2022-)으로 한글 제목에서 ‘종’은 생물분류적 단위로서의 종(種)과 시작과 끝을 알릴 때 치는 종(鐘)의 중의적 의미를 담고 있다.
〈끝의 종〉(2채널)은 전쟁, 기후변화 및 각종 천재지변 등 인간이 상정할 수 있는 모든 지구적 대재앙에 대비하여 몇 세기 후에도 소생시킬 수 있는 씨앗들을 영구보존, 수집하는 스발바르 시드볼트(Svalbard Global Seed Vault) 시설의 활동과정을 바탕으로 빠른 속도로 변해가는 지역 풍경과 전쟁 그 이후의 모습, 대문자 자연에서 역사화된 소문자 자연의 다양한 장면을 한데 엮으며 ‘멸종에 맞서는 인간행위와 의지’를 이야기한다.

영상은 환경문제와 기후변화뿐 아니라 전쟁, 자본주의 상품 논리에 의해 생물 다양성이 감소하고 있음을 지적하고 인간중심주의에서 생명과 자연을 바라보는 불편한 관계성을 우회로 지적하는 한편, 지구가 더 이상 인간에게 생존 불가능한 상태가 되었을 때 “결국 남겨질 이 씨앗들을 누가 어떻게 대지 위에 다시 심을 것인가” 를 동시에 질문한다.
과거 벌어진 핵전쟁에서 멀리 시간 선을 던져 미래로 갔을 때, 인류에게 심각한 위협이 되는 규모의 전쟁과 기후변화의 위험성에 대비하기 위한 기관들 대부분의 계획에는 다수의 인류가 포함되어 있지 않다. 파괴된 생태계를 복원하기 위한 한 알의 씨앗이 땅에 심어지거나, 지구를 떠난 소수의 인간이 다른 행성에 안착하여 새로운 인공생태계를 건립하는 것이 최전선에서 고려되고 있다.
The two-channel video work, Bell of the End(2023), presupposing all possible global catastrophic scenarios such as natural disasters, wars, and climate change, documents the activities of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, which permanently preserves and collects seeds that can be used to regenerate life, even centuries later if necessary, while juxtaposing various scenes of the rapidly changing Arctic Ocean landscapes due to drastic climate change, the aftermath of war, and lowercase nature as historicized from uppercase Nature.

The video not only highlights environmental issues and climate change but also the decrease in biodiversity caused by war and the logic of capitalist commodification, while simultaneously questioning how the seeds that will ultimately remain when the Earth becomes uninhabitable for humans will be planted in the ground and “who will plant them.” Behind these profound questions lies a complex network of environmental, social, political, economic, and military relationships. When casting a line far to the future from a nuclear war-past, most plans by institutions to prepare for the grave threats posed to humanity—such as large scale wars and the risks of climate change—do not include the majority of people. Instead, they contemplate scenarios where a single seed is planted in the devastated ecosystem to restore it, or where a small number of humans settle on other planets, establishing new artificial ecosystems.
