“결국 남겨질 씨앗들은 대지 위에 누가, 어떻게 심을 것인가” 라는 앞선 작업에서 파생된 질문에 대한 단편적인 해답을 찾고자 진행된 사진 연작 〈자연 ll〉는 약 삼십 년 전 년, 미국 텍사스 주에서 진행되었던 대안지구 건립과 생존 실험의 결과물인 ‘바이오스피어 2(Biosphere 2)’ 시설을 연구하며 촬영한 사진 작업이다.
이 실험의 가장 큰 목적은 지구가 더 이상 인류의 생존에 적절하지 않을 정도로 파괴되었을 때, 만들어낸 인공생태계에서 ‘식량을 자급자족하여 확보하고 공기와 이산화탄소의 밸런스를 맞추어 살아남는 것’이었다. 건조한 사막기후를 띄는 오라클(Oracle) 지역, 약 14,000평 규모의 대지 위에 우주기지처럼 건설된 바이오스피어 2는 현재의 지구 상태와 가장 비슷한 환경을 갖추도록 설계되었다. 아마존 열대 우림, 바다, 사막, 습지, 초원 등으로 조성된 자연 생태계에 연구원 8명과 4,000여 종의 동식물이 이주되었고 당시 역사상 ‘인간이 만들어낸 최초의 완벽한 인공생태계’, ‘제2의 지구’로 제시되었다. 제3행성 이주를 염두엔 둔 백 년간의 생존 실험 프로젝트는 2년 만에 완전한 실패로 끝나버렸지만, 이 시설은 여전히 텍사스 일리노이 지역 관광 상품으로 건재한다.

_연구자의 남겨진 일지에서 발췌한 문장에서도 알 수 있듯, 기록에 의하면 이상적인 환경조건에도 불구하고 실험이 진행됨에 따라 걷잡을 수 없이 치솟는 이산화탄소 농도와 바퀴벌레 증식 및 식량 생산량 감소, 실험자 간의 불화 등의 이유로 폐쇄적 생존 실험은 실패했다.
The photo series Nature II , which seeks fragmentary answers to the question derived from the previous work, “Ultimately, who and how will plant the seeds that will eventually remain on the earth?”, was created while researching and capturing images of the ‘Biosphere 2’ facility. This facility was the result of an Alternative Earth construction and survival experiment conducted approximately thirty years ago in Texas, USA .
Biosphere 2, Oracle-Arizona, 1991
The primary objective of this experiment was to create an artificial ecosystem capable of self-sustaining food production and maintaining a balance of air and carbon dioxide in the event that Earth became unsuitable for human survival due to extensive destruction. Constructed on approximately 14,000 square meters of land in the Oracle region of Texas, which experiences a dry desert climate, Biosphere 2 was designed to closely mimic the current environmental conditions of Earth. Within this facility, researchers relocated 8 individuals and over 4,000 species of plants and animals to a carefully crafted natural ecosystem that included elements such as the Amazon rainforest, ocean, desert, wetlands, and grasslands. At the time, it was hailed as the “First fully functional artificial ecosystem created by humans” and was even referred to as “The Earth 2”. Despite being part of a century-long survival experiment with the eventual goal of interplanetary migration, Biosphere 2 ultimately ended in complete failure after just two years. Nevertheless, the facility remains a tourist attraction in the Oracle, Texas area.

_As evident from excerpts in the researcher’s remaining journal entries, despite the ideal environmental conditions, the closed survival experiment failed due to uncontrollably high levels of carbon dioxide, increased cockroach infestations, reduced food production, and interpersonal conflicts among the participants.
