부산항에서 일본-시모노세키항으로 배를 타고 이동하는 하루 동안의 항해를 촬영한 영상이다.
특히 가깝게 지냈던 원폭 피해자 할아버지와 그의 유년시절 이야기를 자주 나눴다. 대부분의 그의 기억은 희미했다. 그러나 그 희미함 속 반짝임마저도 바다 건너 먼 곳에 남겨 두고 온 것을 항상 아쉬워했다. 더 이상 그가 자유롭게 움직일 수 없게 된 2018년 여름, 나는 일본 내 한 주소지를 찾아갔다. 그가 원폭을 만나 한국으로 피난 오기 전까지 부모님과 함께 살던 히로시마 외곽의 작은 집이었다. 히로시마로 가는 2가지 방법 중 비행기 대신 배를 타고 이동하면서 과거 전쟁 피해자들이 징용을 가거나 귀향할 때 거쳤던 길을 되밟게 되었다. 저녁에 출발한 배는 아침이 되어서야 일본에 도착했다. 작업은 빛에 따라 시시각각 바뀌는 바다 영상에 각자의 노래를 부르는 할머니와 아홉 살 소녀의 목소리를 담아냈다.
〈세이렌〉은 그리스 신화에서 바다를 항해하는 선원들을 아름다운 노랫소리로 유혹하여 죽음에 이르게 했다는 ‘오디세우스와 세이렌의 전설’에서 빌려왔다.
This video shows a day’s journey on a ferry from the port of Busan, Korea, to port of Shimonoseki, Japan.
There was an elderly gentleman, an atomic bomb survivor, whom I had close ties with, and we often spoke about his youth. Most of his memory had faded away. However, he always regretted having left his youth behind far away across the sea, the youth that on occasion shone through the vagueness. In the summer of 2018, when he could no longer move freely, I visited an address in Japan. It was the address of the small house he had lived with his parents on the outskirts of Hiroshima before he lived through the atomic bomb and fled to Korea. Out of the two ways to travel to Hiroshima, I chose to take the ferry instead of the plane, leading me to retread the steps of the victims of war who once had been conscripted or were returning home. The ferry that had left in the evening only arrived in Japan the following morning. Against the backdrop of the sea changing its colors according to the light every second and minute, is an old lady and a nine-year-old girl singing, juxtaposed. The name ‘Sirens’ came from the story of the “Odysseus and the Sirens” where the Sirens enchanted and lured sailors travelling across the ocean with their beautiful songs and fated them to die.
“식민지에서 해방된 그 해 겨울부터 많은 조선인들이 자신 들의 고향으로 돌아가기 위한 귀국길에 올랐다. 그들은 살아남은 가족을 추슬러 파괴된 히로시마를 벗어나 야마구치현- 시모노세키 항으로 향했다. 이 중에는 히로시마-우지나 항에서 어렵사리 배를 타는 이들도 있었다. 당시 일본에는 조선인들이 고국으로 돌아가지 않으면 일본인에게 맞아 죽는다.”라는 근거 없는 소문이 퍼지기도 했다. 항구까지 도착한 조선인들은 정기선, 연락선, 어선 등을 가리지 않고 바다를 건널 방법을 찾았다. 그마저도 배를 구하지 못한 이들은 밤에 야매배 (밀선)를 탔다. 대부분 목선이었다. 최종목적지는 부산항이었다. 핵무기에서 살아남은 그들은 다시 한 번 시커먼 바다 위 낡은 배에 자신의 운명을 맡겨야 했다. 10-45명이 누울 틈도 없이 탄 배에서 이 주에서 길게는 한 달이 걸리는 일정이었다. 그러나 이들 중 상당수가 살아서 고국의 땅을 밟지 못했다.“
“나는 배 위에서 한 치 앞도 보이지 않는 검은 바다를 촬영하며 오래전 이 길을 먼저 건너간 이들의 마음을 조금이라도 헤아려보려 했다. 그들의 선택이 지금의 우리 세대를 만들고 아이들의 탄생을 가능케 했다는 사실은 나로 하여금 밤새 한 잠도 이루지 못하게 하였다. 목숨을 건 한 번의 항해가 역사와 미래를 잇는 순간이었다.”

“In the same winter that Korea was liberated, many Koreans made their homeward journey. They gathered their surviving families out of the devastated Hiroshima and headed towards the Yamaguchi prefecture-Shimonoseki harbor. There were a few who managed with difficulty to find themselves a ride from the Hiroshima-Ujina harbor. At the time, unfounded rumors were spreading: ‘Koreans who do not return to their home country would be beaten to death by the Japanese.’ Koreans who made their way to the ports searched desperately to find their way back home, be it on board liners, ferries, or fishing boats. Those who did not manage to, found themselves on small makeshift boats in the middle of the night. Most were small wooden boats. The final destination was the port of Busan. These survivors of the atomic bombs had to leave their fates in the hands of a battered boat on the black ocean currents. In a boat of 10 to 45 people with no room to lie down, this journey would have taken them between 2 weeks and a month. Many of them would not set foot on their homeland.”
“While filming this pitch-black sea on the ferry, I tried to fathom those who had lost their lives in trying to cross this same pathway a long time ago. I lost sleep over the fact that their choices made our generation and made possible the birth of children. It was a moment where their single sail, risking their lives, connected history and future.”
