한 세기의 온도상승을 십 오분 영상에 담아낸, 인간이 살 수 있는 가장 북쪽 마을 롱이어뷔엔 주행일지
“그야말로 여름이었다-”
“어디는 불이 나서 화면이 며칠 동안 시뻘겋고, 다른 곳은 허리케인이 시도 때도 없이 몰아쳐서 차와 냉장고가 지붕 위를 떠다녀요. 사람들은 끝도 없는 비명을 질러대고 있고.. 그 와중에 서로 더 죽이겠다고 총이며 미사일을 쏴대고 있어요-“
〈썸머드라이브〉는 인간이 살아갈 수 있는 지역 중 가장 북쪽에 위치한 롱이어뷔엔 (북극 스발바르제도: 한국다산과학기지 위치) 마을의 도로를 직접 주행하며 촬영한 일대 풍경을 따라 지구 온난화에 의한 기후변화를 단적으로 보여준다. 자동차가 막다른 길 앞에 멈춰 섰을 때 마을의 기온은 11.6℃에 이르는데. 이는 2019년 유럽기후학자들이 발표한 『스발바르 기후 2100』 보고서1가 경고한 한 세기 이후, 2100년도 북극점의 온도이다. 100년간의 온도 변화의 양을 스크리닝 타임으로 치환하여 영상 1초당 0.03도가 오르도록 계산, 제작되었다. 영상에 삽입된 음악은 작곡가와 일 년여간 주제토론을 진행하면서 전곡 작곡하였다.2 끝을 모르고 올라가는 추상적인 숫자는 인간중심주의에서 바라본 자연의 역사를 환기한다.

*1) <스발바르 기후 2100> 보고서 : 1971-2000년까지 조사된 약 30년간의 기온변화 데이터를 바탕으로 기후학자들은 2100년의 북극점 기온을 예측했다. 현재 추이대로면 한 세기 후의 북극 온도는 지금보다 약 26℃ 가량 상승하게 되고, 이에 따른 급격한 환경변화가 예상된다. (‘적극적 기후변화 시나리오 RCP8.5’를 적용한 연구모델 기반)

“It was truly summer-“
“Somewhere, there’s a fire, making the TV screen red for days. And somewhere else, a hurricane strikes all the time, causing cars and refrigerators to float on rooftops. People endlessly scream. Meanwhile, there are people shooting guns and missiles at each other, claiming more lives-“
Summer Drive vividly demonstrates the climate change caused by global warming, following the landscape filmed by driving directly on the road of Longyearbyen (located in the Arctic Svalbard: location of the Korean Dasan Science Base), the northernmost place where humans can live. When the car stops in front of a dead-end road, the temperature of the town reaches 11.6℃. This is the temperature of the North Pole in 2100, a century later, warned by the 『Svalbard Climate 2100』 report published by European climatologists in 2019. The amount of temperature change over 100 years is converted into screening time, calculated and produced to increase by 0.03 degrees per second of the video. The music inserted in the movie was composed by the composer while having a thematic discussion for over a year with artist. The abstract numbers that keep rising remind us of the history of nature viewed from anthropocentrism.

1) Climate in Svalbard 2100’ Report, 2019 : Based on temperature change data collected over approximately 30 years from 1971 to 2000, climatologists have predicted the Arctic temperature at the North Pole for the year 2100. If the current trend continues, the temperature in the Arctic is expected to rise by approximately 26°C compared to the present, resulting in significant environmental changes. This projection is based on a research model that applies the aggressive climate change scenario RCP8.5.
